A Beautiful Day

I've always enjoyed interviews (and more recently blog posts) about "a day in the life." I suppose it's part curiosity and a bit fantasy seeing what people do and imagining an ideal yet average day. With Michel away on business in San Francisco for ten days I've had a lot of time with Theo and solitary evenings to work, pinterest, listen to NPR enjoy a clean bedroom, watch movies, read, all that good stuff. After ten days more or less to myself I found a pretty good (albeit flexible) routine so when Michel came back to Bali yesterday I was pretty psyched to share it with him.

Here is a look at a beautiful day in Bali: 7:30 Theo wakes us up. As most mamas know women have hyper sensitive super power hearing when it comes to their babies. This means I can hear Theo beginning to toss and turn and grumble even in my deepest full on dream sleep. Michel on the other hand has super power dad sleeping skills, he can and will sleep through Theo crawling back and forth over his head while kicking only to notice later that he feels a bit poorly rested. This being said I'm not bitter. As someone who was never able to wake up early and seize the day I am actually starting to enjoy waking up at the crack 'o dawn.

Given this is an ideal day, not a boring make breakfast at home in pjs day, the three of us head out for breakfast. There is a great little pathway from our house in Sanur to the beach that I adore taking. Sure we could cut through a hotel, or walk to the bakery along the main shopping street, but our little path has those options beat by far. The path is a partially hidden, sandy,  palm tree lined, short cut and there is a beautiful brown mama cow and her often nursing baby cow munching grass in the shade along our hidden beach path. The beach walkway is pretty cool too with lots of beautiful villas to peer through plants at, little stands selling sarongs, beach toys and boat trips and a funny blend of jogging tourists hopping to stay fit in the preheat morning "cool". We arrive at my favorite breakfast spot of the moment, a Swedish bakery with the best lattes in Bali and aptly named freshly squeezed juices. I order "detox me" which is aloe, ginger, mint and lime (basically a health mojito) and a slice of pretty killer carrot cake or banana bread.

Walking home along the beach Theo stops to play in the sand and say hi to all the wild Bali dogs who are very sweet but always scare me a little. Then with Theo on Michel's shoulders we head home for a refreshing dip in the pool. Theo who still can't quiet master the balance aspect of walking loves his inflatable race car inter tube, which allows him to tare around the shallow section of the pool on wobbly legs, leaning dangerously forward as he goes. When Theos nanny Nengah arrives around 10am Michel and I swim some laps to wake up mentally before heading inside to work. Some days I help with publicity and marketing or business strategy, however when we our mid production on a game I focus on freelancing. This means I often spend the morning catching up on the news (NPR, Asianews, jakarta post, blogs, pinterest?) drinking tea and researching for the piece i'm working on.

Around noon when the heat starts to do our heads we head to a local warong for a cheap and delicious lunch. I order Tempe (fried soy beans) kale salad, tofu (which is spicy and often tastes different from day to day depending on what it shared a pan with) and fresh juice or tonic water. After lunch I write or head to an interview / shooting depending on what I'm working on or edit footage from the day before. By 5pm I head back home to let the nanny go and spend some time playing with theo. I make him dinner give him a bath and put him to sleep after a few hours of Legos, walking practice, musical instrument playing, and crazy train following around.

Some nights if I'm extra motivated and organized I head to yoga at manic organic. It's a beautiful place made of bamboo and open to the sea breeze. I love going in the evening and then meeting Michel for a romantic dinner all relaxed and zen. Twice a week, Kade and Janet, who work at the villa, come to watch Theo in the evening so Michel and I can have dinner at one of the restaurants in Sanur. My favorite place for now is a little shack on the beach near the Bali hayat with tables made of old overturned fishing boats, bench seating, ice cold Bintang and a delicious chicken dish called ayam california. By midnight I'm in bed or on the balcony reading and ready for sleep and another beautiful day in the morning.
